What is inside

  • Understanding gout: what it is and how it is diagnosed.
  • Flares: the first 48 hours, urgent-care signs, and home comfort measures.
  • Long-term care: urate-lowering treatment as an idea, treat-to-target in plain words, and the first months.
  • Daily life: food and drink, travel and holidays, foot care, and help for caregivers.
  • Claims you will see online, and how to talk them over with a clinician.
  • Printable tools: a flare log and a questions sheet for your visits.

Each medical claim names its public source, such as the 2020 American College of Rheumatology gout guideline and NIAMS. The full source list is at the back. You do not need to read it cover to cover; a table up front points you to the part that matches today.

Who writes it

The guide is written by the Gout Resource team, some of whom live with gout. We are not a clinic. No named clinician has medically reviewed the guide yet, and we would rather say so plainly. See about and the editorial policy.

What it is not

It does not diagnose you, choose a medicine, or give doses, schedules, or blood urate target numbers. Nothing in it cures gout or clears crystals on your own. It has no affiliate links. Much of the same material is free on this site; the guide gathers it into one printable file.

Free starter kit

The Gout Flare Starter Kit is a free 8-page printable: a plan for the first days of a flare, an urgent-care checklist, a flare tracker, and questions for your clinician. You can also print the flare tracker and questions sheet right now.
